The 2025 Mini Countryman S: Just Shy of a JCW

Posted on

Mini’s Countryman SUV has been redesigned for 2025, offering both the S and John Cooper Works (JCW) variants. While the JCW is known for its rudeness and urgency, the Countryman S also proves to be quite capable, showing that it’s not too far off from its high-performance sibling. After spending three days driving the new Countryman S and JCW during the Mini Takes the States road rally, it’s clear that the S model holds its own quite well.

Performance and Powertrain

The 2025 Mini Countryman S features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 241 horsepower, which is 71 horsepower less than the JCW’s 312-horsepower unit. Both models share a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. According to Mini, the Countryman S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, compared to the JCW’s 5.2-second estimate.

Despite the difference in power, the Countryman S manages to confidently tackle winding mountain roads, showcasing impressive performance. The Countryman has grown significantly for 2025, adding over five inches in length, almost an inch in width, and close to four inches in height compared to the 2024 model. This increase in size gives the new Countryman a larger presence on the road.

Driving Experience

The new Countryman S exhibits a tall-in-the-saddle feeling, especially compared to the last-gen model. This sensation is more pronounced in the S than in the JCW, though it only becomes noticeable when driving briskly. The steering is quick and fairly communicative, although it doesn’t quite match the satisfaction of the new Cooper S hatchback.

The ride quality of the Countryman S is commendable, feeling more compliant than the JCW and less restless at highway speeds. The comprehensive interior makeover adds to the Countryman’s charm, offering a variety of themes for the circular infotainment display, including one that mimics the gauge cluster of a vintage Cooper.

Interior and Comfort

The 2025 Countryman’s interior exudes richness with textile-covered panels on the dash and upper door panels. There’s more emphasis on storage cubbies and ergonomics, making it a practical choice for long journeys. The cargo hold is sizable, and the rear seat can comfortably accommodate two adults for extended trips. However, fitting three passengers in the rear seat can be a tight squeeze.

The JCW variant offers similar interior features, but the Countryman S provides a more affordable option without sacrificing much in terms of fun. For those who prefer to spend on features rather than power, the Countryman S proves to be a smart choice.

Features and Trim Options

The Countryman S test car was a loaded Iconic-trim model with the Favoured appearance package, which includes 20-inch wheels and sport seats with driver-side massaging. It also featured a Harman/Kardon stereo system and the Comfort Package Max, which adds a wireless smartphone charging pad, augmented-reality navigation, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Priced at $44,295, this represents $4400 in options, making it a cost-effective alternative to the JCW.

Competition and Market Position

With its refined design and increased interior space, the 2025 Countryman S is better positioned to compete with models like the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLB-class, and Volvo XC40. The new Countryman is a more well-rounded product, and the attention to detail in its latest redesign is evident regardless of the variant.
